Strikes by websites- what can an ordinary surfer do?

January 18th, 2012 posted by admin

The recent blackout implemented by Wikipedia has brought forth one harsh realization that ordinary surfers of the Internet had completely ignored. We need the websites on the Internet as badly as the websites need us. It is easy to glibly talk about the fact that the customer is the king. However, the truth is that the customer can quickly become a commoner if the website goes off-line. You have probably surfed the Internet without really understanding that the relationship between the website and the web surfer is a symbiotic one.

One cannot exist without the other. Hence, the next time you see a link that says that the octopus hr software can be downloaded from here, just remind yourself that there is no guarantee that the link should be present there at all times. Of course, the current blackout is taking place for an ideological reason. The suggested legislation to protect privacy on the Internet is so harsh that American websites have decided to use this unique form of protest to convey that they are not happy with the same. However, what is the guarantee that the websites will not strike for commercial reasons?

It is easy to say that one website will be replaced by another if it does not cater to the customers. However, the truth is that Google can get away with any and every crime simply because it is the most popular search engine. The competitors of Google are just not in a position to take the necessary steps to overthrow its dominance. In such a scenario, we have to ask ourselves whether we have any freedom of choice or not. In theory, we have the freedom to choose which websites we want to visit.

However, this freedom is available as long as the website wants to serve us. Once the website goes bad, we discover that we are just not in a position to tackle the issue in an effective and sensible manner. Is there any other website on the Internet today that will replace Wikipedia in a span of a few hours? Of course not. This is where web surfers are very vulnerable.
