Music, rock icons and youth- is the connection broken?

Do you remember that phase in the 70s and 80s when hard rock and rap music was considered unhealthy for youngsters? Many people use to openly voice their concerns about such rock stars acting as role models for the younger generation. The images of rock stars with their spiked hair and dirty clothes on pop up stands caused the blood pressure of parents to rise to stratospheric levels. Any and every misdemeanor of the youth would usually end up on the doors of these role models.

The music icons of the two decades were a much maligned lot. Well, the recent unrest in and around the world has, rather surprisingly, occurred without any music related role model being criticized. There is no pop star or rock icon that is being criticized for misleading and misguiding the youngsters. There are no songs that thumb its nose at the established norms and call the youth to adopt an attitude of irreverence and disrespect.

So, what does this mean? Can one safely say that there is no connection between such pop artists and the mental conditioning of the youth? Has the connection been broken down? Or has it merely gone underground to surface at a later date? Well, the current generation is the probably the first one to grow up in an integrated world like ours. A laptop and a wireless Internet connection can help youngsters interact with individual situated halfway across the world. Hence, the need for an icon or a role model seen singing on the stage has automatically come down.

Perhaps such role models continue to exist but have focused more on targeting youngsters on the Internet. Whatever the case, one can safely say that the old rules no longer apply to the modern day youngster and that things have changed permanently.
