Digital World – Facilitating The Armchair Revolution

June 29th, 2011 posted by admin

Internet and digital media has played a major role in the recent agitation against the dictatorship in Egypt and the prevalent corruption in India. The revolution reached its logical end in Egypt but is still ongoing in India. The howl of anger and criticism on social networking web sites has made an impact. Protestors got the government to something that would have been deemed unimaginable five years ago.

These changes and developments are important for the United Kingdom as well. London is the melting hub of virtually all the nations in the world. Immigration is a very controversial issue but London has always been friendly towards its immigrants. Of course, cultural conflicts have occurred but that has never stopped people from looking forward to a life in London that offers better opportunities and facilities than anywhere else in the world.

As immigrants and native born residents find ways to overcome their conflict, the spillover is bound to affect routine life in London. Today, it is possible for a detailed debate to take place even when the protesters are wearing their pajamas and are lounging in their bedrooms writing code for timesheet software.

Street protests often threaten to end up in ugly riots. The government would not mind a nice and raucous debate on controversial points in the virtual world. After all, a virtual slap never hurts as much as a real one does. As time goes by, society will find ways to use digital technology to sort out its conflict and disputes without dealing with real violence.
