What if religion was banned for youth?
You hear all kinds of things on the bus. You learn to block out most of them or laugh at some of them, but every now and again you overhear something that sort of makes sense. In this case it was quite a radical idea, and the man who was saying it was the same guy who I had seen in town handing out leaflets. His idea was this: that the government should ban religion for the youth. His thinking was this:
1) The youth have a new religion and it is technology. In a way he had a point, I suppose. If they’d have had our technology hundreds of years ago, how would that have changed the way people viewed and interacted with the world?
2) Religion is too confusing a concept to take in when you are pubescent and already dealing with all kinds of hormonal issues. This really did make sense, and this was when I really started to listen.
3) If religion was banned for youth, they would then be able to revolt against this rule, which could potentially be a good thing. In this case, religion would eventually be favoured, and thus it would garner much more respect.
All in all he had some interesting points, but even so, I couldn’t help but look at the massive silver rings around his neck and feel slightly concerned. When it comes down to it, I thought, banning something like religion would be wrong. It’s enough, really, to give thought to these things and make our own individual minds up, I think.
