The Return of the Thatcher Years.
Have you ever noticed how things will so often go full circle?
Back in the 1980s when I was a teenager (yes, I really am that old!) there was a horrible Conservative government in power who did not appear to care one iota about school-leavers. This was epitomised with their Y.T.S (Young Tory Slaves) idea and 90% of teenagers were left seething with resentment.
Well, it looks very much as if those same depressing days have returned! Except that this time around, even more areas of teenage life are being stifled; young people now have pedantic levels of political correctness, ridiculous EU regulations and overly stringent new benefits guidelines to contend with on a daily basis!!! Now, everything is being policed; the types of jokes we tell, the moulded plugs on toasters and the length of time we take to find employment before having to worry about our dole money being stopped.
But there is a small glimmer of hope for this generation of teenagers… They have an amazing world of technology to escape into! When the real world becomes too painful and tedious there are some awesome video games in which to immerse yourself. And no matter how bleak employment prospects may become, there are countless training opportunities to be found on the World Wide Web.
Back in my hey-day, we were not lucky enough to have such wonderful diversions! It may be pretty grim growing-up in the shadow of Cameron, but at least you can plug-in your PS3 and forget all about him for a while.
Besides, maybe we will even see a new generation of (proper) Punk Rock to counteract this horrid Tory tide!!!
